Abstract: | In this contribution, I present evidence strongly suggesting that reading popular, self-selected fiction is a highly effective and very pleasant way of acquiring language and developing literacy. Not only does it increase language competence, it also increases knowledge of a variety of subjects: people who read more, know more, and it results in deeper understanding of others’ points of view. |
