Das mittelalterliche Kirchenportal stellt einen Schlüsselbereich der Architektur- und Skulpturforschung dar, in dem sich innovative Bauverfahren, technische Erfahrung und ikonographische Programme zu einer Einheit verdichten. Dieser Sammelband vereint Beiträge, die sich der bau- und kunsthistorischen Untersuchung ausgewählter Portale aus Deutschland, Italien, Frankreich und England widmen. The medieval church portal represents a key area of architectural and sculptural research, in which innovative construction methods, technical experience and iconographic programmes come together to form a unity. This anthology brings together contributions devoted to the architectural and art-historical study of selected portals from Germany, Italy, France and England. The combination of architecture and sculpture, then as now, requires a high degree of cooperation - an approach that also characterises the contributions collected here and opens up new perspectives for art history.

Le portail d'église médiéval représente un domaine clé de la recherche en architecture et en sculpture, dans lequel les procédés de construction innovants, l'expérience technique et les programmes iconographiques se concentrent en une unité. Ce recueil réunit des contributions consacrées à l'étude de portails sélectionnés en Allemagne, en Italie, en France et en Angleterre, tant du point de vue de l'architecture que de l'histoire de l'art. L'association de l'art de la construction et de la sculpture exige, hier comme aujourd'hui, un maximum de coopération - une approche qui caractérise également les contributions rassemblées ici et ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour l'histoire de l'art.
