Abstract:
Chartres BM 161 is the only copy of Burchard's Liber decretorum known to have been at Chartres in medieval times. As a possible formal source for the collections atributed to Ivo of Chartres, it is a key witness for the spread of Burchard in France and the long-term impact of this collection on Gratian and bayond. After the fire of 1944, however, the codex was thought to be lost completely. Thanks to new digital tools, however, its content can be reconstructed in considerable detail. At the same time, a palaeographical analysis was used to re-date the script. As a result, we conclude that Chartres BM 161 was produced at Chartres in the early twelfth century; while it cannot have been identicial with the Burchard copy used by Ivo of Chartres, it must have been copied from an exemplar very closely related to one of the Burchard copies used for Ivo's Decretum.
