Abstract:
The aim of the study was to develop and psychometrically test the questionnaire on
domain-specific interest in art (FDKI). Based on interest theory, the FDKI was developed
to measure interest in art in the five domains of applied arts, visual arts, performing arts,
literature, and music. Interest is conceptualized independently of knowledge and concrete
behavior. The psychometric analyses of the final FDKI scale are based on a data set of N =
112 individuals and found high reliability. The postulated theoretical interest facets of
cognition, emotion, and value showed high correlations and could not be empirically
separated as independent factors. Bifactorial modeling suggested that the interest in art
measured by the FDKI has a general factor in addition to the domain structure. For
validation, correlations in line with expectations were found with the established Vienna Art
Interest and Art Knowledge Questionnaire (VAIAK) Part A, the Openness to Experience
scale, and the creative self-concept. There were also indications of a gender effect. The
FDKI provides an empirical basis for the differentiated measurement of interest in art, thus
opening up new perspectives for research.
