Description
This respository contains the presentations of the talks given at the internantional workshop “The Slavic verb: a multi-faceted approach” that took place at the University of Bamberg at Mai 24, 2024.
In the field of Slavic linguistics, the verb has traditionally been a focal point of research, with a historical emphasis on describing the so-called verbal aspect, i.e. a specific obligatory Slavic feature that enables the verb to express how an action, event, or state extends over time. However, quantitative methods have played a limited role, and theoretical frameworks have primarily originated from an internal Slavic perspective. This workshop aimed to address this gap by providing a multi-faceted perspective on the Slavic verb:
The workshop will explored the following domains of the Slavic verb:
• Morphology: Word formation processes of verbs, including borrowed verbs; functions of non-finite verb forms such as participles and converbs (CZ přechodník, RUS deepričastie) across Slavic languages (and beyond)
• Grammatical Categories: Historical development of verbal aspect.
• Argument Structures: Variation in the types and number of arguments (e.g. nouns) that co-occur with the verb.
• Vocabulary/Semantics: Semantic verb classes across Slavic languages.
• Competition: Examining competitive relationships between suffixes in verb formation and between arguments of semantically similar verbs and their role in language acquisition.
