Im Zuge der Auseinandersetzungen um die Maßnahmen zur Bekämpfung der Corona-Pandemie hat das Problem Wissenschaftsskepsis große Aufmerksamkeit im öffentlichen Diskurs auf sich gezogen. Ausgehend von der Beobachtung, dass dieser verstärkten Problematisierung nicht einfach ein ebenfalls ‚größer‘ gewordenes Problem zuzuordnen ist, fragt der Artikel nach der Form und Funktion der Semantik von der Wissenschaftsskepsis: „Wissenschaftsskepsis“ im Diskurs der politischen Öffentlichkeit ist, so die These, eine Stilisierung des Problems, dass das Richtige wider verfügbaren besseren Wissens nicht geschieht, die dieses Problem ursächlich mit einer Einstellung vermeintlich skeptischer anderer gegenüber „der Wissenschaft“ verknüpft. Die Semantik entlastet damit das politische System von der Thematisierung der Grenzen seiner Kapazitäten für bindende Entscheidungen. Der Artikel schließt mit einem Plädoyer, sich bei der Untersuchung der Probleme, die unter „Wissenschaftsskepsis“ verhandelt werden, auf konkrete, thematisch und sozial begrenzte, Übersetzungskonflikte zwischen Wissenschaft und Politik zu konzentrieren und die Annahme eines Problems „Wissenschaftsskepsis“ und seine Untersuchung hintenanzustellen.

In the course of the controversies surrounding the measures to combat the Covid 19 pandemic, the problem of science skepticism has attracted a great deal of attention in public discourse. Based on the observation that this increased problematization cannot simply be attributed to a problem that has become ‘bigger’, the article examines the form and function of the semantics of skepticism towards science: ‘science skepticism’ in the discourse of the political public is a stylization of the problem that the right thing is not being done against available better knowledge, which causally links this problem with an attitude of supposedly skeptical others towards ‘science’. The semantics thus relieves the political system of having to thematize the limits of its capacity to make binding decisions. The article concludes with a plea to concentrate on concrete, thematically and socially limited translation conflicts between science and politics when investigating the problems that are negotiated under ‘science skepticism’ and to put the assumption of a problem of ‘science skepticism’ and its investigation at the back of the agenda.
