Gegenstand der Arbeit ist die Konzeptualisierung der Internationalität der Unternehmung. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet die Erkenntnis, dass einzelne existente (Mess)Konzepte der Komplexität des Konstruktes Internationalität der Unternehmung nicht gerecht werden. Der Operationalisierung und Quantifizierung fehlt bislang ein konzeptuelles Fundament. Ein weiteres Defizit dieses Forschungsfeldes ist seine Unübersichtlichkeit, die sich in der ungeordneten Vielzahl und Mannifaltigkeit der Arbeiten manifestiert. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist daher zweigeteilt: Erstens sollen existente nicht-quantitative und quantitative Konzepte der Internationalität im Rahmen der Darstellung des aktuellen Forschungsstandes systematisch aufgearbeitet werden. Diese systematische Darlegung wird durch eine ausführliche Diskussion und Analyse der betrachteten Konzepte vertieft. Auf der Basis der gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und weiterführender theoretischer Überlegungen wird dann, zweitens, eine eigenständige Konzeptualisierung der Internationalität auf Unternehmensebene vorgeschlagen.

The research field of (measurement) concepts depicting the degree of multinationality of a firm is vast and complex. While there exist numerous suggestions for the operationalization and quantification of this construct, there are only very few proposals for a conceptual framework of firm multinationality. The conceptualization of the construct of firm multinationality is, however, a precondition for the validity of measurement concepts. Hence, the development of a well-founded conceptual framework is necessary. To fully grasp and analyze the components of firm multinationality, existent quantitative and non-quantitative concepts of multinationality are systematically discussed. As a result, key components of a conceptual framework as well as recommendations for the construction of measurement concepts of firm multinationality are identified and assembled.
