Abstract:
By 11 Dec. 2020, the Pfizer vaccine against COVID-19 was authorised for emergency use by the Food & Drug Administration in the USA. Other vaccines from different companies were later availed. Of these, Zimbabwe chose to use Sinopharm, then Sinovac from China and later the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. When it was reported that it would be expected that everyone (except those with genuine medical reasons against vaccinations) be vaccinated, responses from religious leaders varied. Of interest is how leaders of New Pentecostal Movements (NPMs) in Zimbabwe deployed prophecy to influence vaccine uptake. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the prophecies given during this period and establish how these
shaped people’s attitudes towards vaccines. The intention of the paper is to highlight the continued battle for supremacy between religion and science. Data for the paper will be gathered from sermons uploaded on Youtube as well as structured interviews with selected people in Zimbabwe. Secondary sources will be used to support primary data.
