Description
This project aims to publish a special issue in ASIEN: The German Journal of Contemporary Asia, which is the most prestigious journal in the field of Asian Studies in Germany, centred on the topic of transnational civic engagements performed by Korean migrants in Germany. It will involve researchers working in the humanities and social sciences throughout Germany. Its purpose is to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Germany in 2023. There has already been a significant number of studies on the first generation of Korean immigrants in Germany, who came to Germany as ‘guest workers’ in the 1960s and 1970s. The Korean guest workers were involved in rebuilding the German economy after WWII. In particular, scholars in Korean studies have recorded and released the voices of these workers using the life history method. They have also sought to link these empirical studies to theoretical discussion in Germany. In recent decades, the pattern and motivation of Korean migrants in Germany has become extensively diverse with aiming at study, business, employment, or an alternative lifestyle. As a result, the scope of their activities as well as the influences of Korean migrants on German society has appeared in various forms. In this special issue, we attempt to explore the meaning of ‘transnationality’ as well as the ‘identity as a global citizen’ as shown in the diversified activities of Korean migrants, by focusing on the civic engagements of Korean migrants in Germany and developing a theoretical framework based on the empirical studies discussed in this special issue.
