It was object to a campaign of architectural documentation during which a complete 3D laser scan of the dome hall was produced. On this basis, exact ground plans and sections of the building were drawn, which depict its true shape without idealizing. Considering the seismic history of the place, the use of laser scanning as a basis for future conservation and restoration issues is obvious. In the present study, the laser scan measures and the drawings were taken as a basis for examining the structure of the dome hall in more detail than hitherto possible. A comparison of significant measures shows surprising variations throughout the building, which cannot be explained from later distortions and must go back to the period of construction. It can be concluded that the original building was erected with considerable tolerances in measures. Nevertheless, it can be reasonable to research measures within these tolerances and to establish a system of measures underlying the elevation of the dome hall interior. It appears that the borders between the principal zones of the walls with arches, squinches and blind arches, and the dome, which follow one another in vertical sequence, are placed at heights that are related to the basic measure of the ground plan. Conclusions involving the absolute height of the dome hall have, however, to be taken with caution because the vault of the dome has been renovated after the Saljuq period. Besides, the interior of the dome hall would have looked differently with its surface decoration that has been lost but would have considerably influenced the appearance of the architecture, and was certainly envisaged from the beginning. Apart from these conclusions on the process of architectural design, the new section drawing also makes it most likely that the original planning of the dome hall at Borujerd did not envisage a double-shell dome, since a single-shell dome even on the profile of the present inner dome would have presented an aesthetically satisfying profile to the exterior.otherArchitectureMosqueIranSaljuqIslamic720Masǧid-i ǧāmiʿ-i Burūǧird : Nukātī dar bāb-i ṭarrāḥī va-sāḫt-i bināhā-i daura-i salǧūqīThe Great Mosque of Borujerd : Aspects of Architectural Design During the Saljuq Period in Iranarticle
