This development of new communication and computing techniques as well as the incorporation of machine learning for intelligent image analysis offer new opportunities for classical medical services like telesurgery. In our paper we consider the design of a classical telesurgery system and analyze its architecture. Then we discuss the extension of its functional modules to support remote surgery based on a reliable multi-path communication among its components. We provide an investigation of important key performance indices of such a remote-controlled telesurgery service. To achieve deeper technical insights on the system’s performance of such a distributed architecture and its communication flows, a telesurgery prototype is studied by GNS3-emulations within a virtualized test bed.
