In the literature various methods have been developed for this purpose. The most popular examples are Boehm's COCOMO, Albrecht's function-Point method or Sneed's object-point method. The two last-named methods are based on early results of the analysis phase, whereas COCOMO is based on an a priori estimation of the software size in “lines of code”. On the other hand, modern software development environments usually employ the object management facilities of a repository to store the documents created and maintained during software development. Hence, software cost estimation methods like the object-Point method, which are based on early analysis results, can be implemented easily on top of the repository.
